Do you want to be part of a team of support members who are enabling a startup to cure age related diseases? At Gordian you’ll be performing a critical role in supporting the facilities team and ensuring the building is functioning at its best.
The Destination:
Gordian Biotechnology is a therapeutics company whose mission is to cure age-related diseases and ultimately allow people to lead longer, healthier lives. We’ve built a technology that lets us test multiple drugs in a single animal, allowing us to move more quickly while getting better data and spending less money. It is our hope that our technology will allow us to treat and cure the diseases that affect millions of people world-wide. You can learn more about our technology on our website.
The Journey:
Our mission is audacious, and the path will be full of both challenges and excitement. Two things characterize the Gordian experience: 1) We work as a team, with ownership in our own roles and trust in each other. 2) We strive for extraordinary outcomes, and in doing so grow our skills and capability.
Team – Relying on each other begins with transparency. We set clear goals, visibly connecting individuals and teams to our company objectives. This empowers each of us to make autonomous decisions about our work, knowing how they will affect the bigger picture. Our communication happens out in the open. We give and receive feedback from a perspective of helping each other grow, share mistakes, and ask for help.
Extraordinary – Every day, we ask ourselves ‘How could this process/outcome be even better?’. Knowing our overall mission, we do what we think helps us make the most progress, without asking for permission. We don’t shy away from big challenges or unknown territory, but find a way to excel. Our colleagues are amazing, both at what they do and as people. They inspire us to keep up, to not let them down, and be inspiring in return.
We set ambitious project goals and support each other to meet them, while maintaining the balance individuals need to thrive and achieve excellence. Our team is geared towards helping each other out and maintaining a culture of intellectual and social fun. We like getting things done. We unwind with weekly team lunches, and support each other both in the office and outside of it.
If this environment sounds appealing, help us bring it to life. We are at the beginning of a long journey, and want both your ability and your personality along for the ride. Our culture is a source of great pride; it represents both who we are, and who we wish to be. You can dive deeper here.
About the Role:
Your mission as Facilities & Janitorial Technician is to support and assist the facilities team, maintain the functioning and visual presentation of the facility. Using your skills and knowledge you will enable those around you to focus on other critical tasks while advancing your own.
Gordian has a 17,000 square foot building that needs care and attention to function at its optimal state. This role is cross functional in that you will be doing some facilities maintenance and tasks along with janitorial. Roughly 80% of your role will focus on janitorial. This entails maintaining the general cleanliness and organization of the facility, from vacuuming the carpet, cleaning the glass, sanitizing the bathrooms, maintaining the conference rooms and showers along with other tasks. Of particular importance, Gordian maintains a colony of mice, rats and other rodents; you will be responsible for ensuring their holding rooms are kept to the highest level of cleanliness, meeting not just the requirements of the regulatory agencies, but our own.
When it comes to facility maintenance, you’ll be taking on autoclaving, stocking the lab supplies, ensuring lab coats are rotated and keeping shipping and receiving neat and clean. In order to complete these tasks, you will receive training from our experienced facilities and operations people. As you gain more skills, you will be given the opportunity to help with additional tasks.
You'll be working with the Facilities Manager and VP of Operations to ensure that tasks are completed and done in a timely order. Communication will happen through Asana, Slack, and verbally to help ensure everyone on the team has clear goals and objectives for the coming days, weeks and months.
You may also occasionally work with scientists directly if they need assistance or help with something in your field of expertise. This could be anything from helping to get supplies or finding a home for something temporarily.
In this role you’ll have to pull from a variety of different skill sets to accomplish your goals successfully.
In your first month, you’ll have completed onboarding and have learned how to do a group of basic tasks in both facilities and janitorial services.
By three months you’ll continue to improve your skills and start helping to improve processes around both facilities and janitorial services. You’ll now be working almost entirely independently with little supervision. You’ll be given the flexibility to determine your hours, and shift them such that janitorial tasks are handled when there are fewer people on site (before 8 AM and after 7 PM).
In six months you’ll now be functioning completely independently and will be checking in weekly with your team to ensure daily and weekly goals are being met and what new tasks or goals you might be taking on.
About You:
You have a history of successful execution, both in- and outside of your job description. You want a chance to do your best work, immerse yourself and excel, alongside people who will inspire you and whom you’ll be excited to spend your days with.
You truly want to play a key role in an early-stage startup screening new targets for intractable diseases of aging: A fast-paced environment full of both uncertainty and new challenges, demanding relentless resourcefulness.
You have a strong attention to detail and problem solving skills as these will be key to being adaptable to various situations. As you take on new challenges you’ll be given more responsibility in which these skills will be critical. You’ll be faced with tasks that are required to happen daily along with occasional requests from team members that may or may not interrupt your current tasks.
You’ll be comfortable working in a lab and vivarium space. You’ll be around potentially hazardous materials and animals which are not your typical environments. So it will be beneficial that you’re capable of being in this environment and taking the appropriate precautions to be safe and complete your tasks.
You’ve demonstrated that you’re capable of maintaining a facility by having a history of janitorial service and experience handling various types of situations. You’ll be in charge of regular cleaning and disinfection of various surfaces in the building, management of waste in the building ensuring that every item ends up in the proper waste stream, restocking of restrooms, labs and other common areas with necessary items, ensuring that floors are clean and safe, and various other tasks related to ensuring a safe and clean environment for the team.
The Details:
This role will be hourly, for 40 hours a week. It will start with a three-month contract, after which there will be an opportunity to extend. It is Gordian’s goal to make this a permanent position for the right individual.
Gordian aims to provide everything you need to thrive. Beyond our community and science, you’ll have full health/dental/vision/life insurance, 401k with match, onsite lunch paid for 3 days a week, an onsite gym, and access to people who will support your professional growth. Our building is in the heart of the biotech capital of South San Francisco.
